ADULT RE TEAM INVITES COURSE PROPOSALS!

The Adult Religious Education Team (Rev. Anthony David, Rev. Marti Keller, Cindy Hoffner, and Christine Ristaino) invites UUCA members and friends to submit proposals for courses/workshops you are interested in offering during the next year. We envision that the curriculum will focus on (but not be limited to) four main areas: UU Core Identity and Theology (including all source traditions), Spiritual Practice (broadly defined), Life Skills, and Leadership and Service. For offerings this fall (through December), please submit proposals as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, August 1. See the July newsletter or the Adult RE webpage (scroll to the end) for details on how to submit proposals. If this is a new venture for you, we will be happy to work with you to develop your ideas. Of course, submitting a proposal is not a guarantee that a course will be selected; we will consider a variety of factors, including the range of other offerings and space availability.

UUCA ANNOUNCES A NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR

Rev. Anthony David has announced the selection of Donald Milton, III as Music Director at UUCA. He arrives on staff in August. Please see the full announcement in the June newsletter.

FALL REGISTRATION FOR RE DUE NOW

RE registrations for fall must be completed as soon as possible. You can do this online or pick up a form at the Family Information desk. We are already working on class placements and recruiting teams for fall; you can also indicate your volunteer choice on the registration form. Registration is required for all families with children and youth in childcare and RE classes and youth groups.

NEW PRESCHOOL AT UUCA OPENS IN AUGUST

Progressive Preschool opens August 18. Atlanta Progressive Preschool is a program of UUCA and an outgrowth of UUCA's successful parent's morning out program, Morning Sunshine. We have some availability for the 2008-2009 school year.

APP serves children ages 6 months to 4 years, including a half day Pre-K class. Our program is play-based while incorporating educational practices and theories that center on the belief that children are able to make meaningful decisions and discoveries through play and exploration.

If you or someone you know is looking for a preschool program and would like to schedule a tour, visit our web site at atlantaprogressivepreschool.org or contact Kim Gordon, director at 404.634.5134, ext.213.

We have an extensive wish list, which is located on our website. Some of the items include digital cameras, infant/toddler mattresses, international baby dolls and non commercial picture books. We are recycling printer cartridges. Please drop your used cartridges to UUCA's family information desk. This will be an ongoing fundraiser for the preschool.

PENNY HARVEST FOR ENVIRONMENTAL THEME IN RE

To go along with our environmental theme this summer, we'll be doing a different kind of recycling by "harvesting" pennies. Visit the website of Common Cents (commoncents. org) to learn more about The Penny Harvest and how our pennies will be put to good use in making grants to community organizations. The penny jar will be at the Family Information desk in the front lobby each Sunday, so bring your pennies!

CHILDCARE AT UUCA THIS SUMMER

When the summer worship schedule begins on May 25 (one service at 10am), childcare will be available without reservation from 9:30-12:30 (If there are no children signed in for programs following the service, providers will leave at 11:30).

If childcare is needed for a weekday evening during the summer (after the last Wonderful Wednesday on May 21), it must be requested online by the event organizer at least 3 weeks in advance. If approved, participants must make an online reservation one week in advance.

EARTH SCOUTS IN FIRST YEAR AT UUCA

UUCA's Earth Scouts has been focusing on "Respect for Nature" during this "inaugural" first year and will be doing mostly outdoor activities - hikes, birdwatching, camping, etc. UUCA Earth Scouts is organized cooperatively by the participating families, in other words, we take turns organizing events and do things together as families.

If you would like to learn more, we have a yahoo group. To join and to volunteer to lead an activity, contact Mark Nuhfer at mailto:mjn9@cwru.edu or Laura Yamashita at LauraYama@aol.com.

For more information on the national Earth Scouts organization, go to earthscouts.org.

FOOD AND SPIRITUALITY

Cindy Brown, Our Seminarian in Residence, has created a 5 week intergenerational summer RE program on "Food and Spirituality" as part of her Care of Creation class at Candler. If you are interested in participating, please contact Cindy Brown at mailto:cbrown@uuca.org or Dana Boyle at danaboyle@bellsouth.net.

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY

The Lay Ministers at UUCA are working to begin a new Homebound Ministry program. The Lay Ministers are seeking names of UUCA members who cannot easily leave their home who might enjoy a card, phone call or visit from a Lay Minister now and then. We are especially interested in staying in touch with members who are no longer able to attend services. If you know of anyone you think would be appropriate for this ministry, please contact Ginny Sjoquist at sjoquist@bellsouth.net.

GIVE AWAY THE SPACE PROGRAM

Our Give Away the Space program allows outside groups to use the facility without a rental fee. These groups are required to have a building attendant and to pay any fees for the building attendant.

• Give Away the Space events are reviewed and must be approved by the Executive Team.

• Priority is given to non-profit groups

• Most groups are only allowed to be considered for GATS once a year. Groups that exchange their services for use of UUCA's facilities may be considered for an ongoing gift of facility use. (Example: Happy Horns Chamber Group needs a monthly rehearsal space. In exchange for this they provide music during a worship service).

SERMON TEXT NOW AVAILABLE AS AN RSS FEED

You may now subscribe to the text versions of UUCA sermons by pointing your RSS reader here. (Audio podcasts of recorded sermons have been available for some time now). If you regularly read blogs, news items, or other frequently-updated content online, you're probably already reading RSS feeds (whether you realize it or not!). There are many different ways to read RSS feeds:

* Web sites, such as Bloglines, Google Reader and My Yahoo! * Web browsers, such as Safari, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox * Standalone readers, such as RSSReader and SharpReader * Email-based readers, such as NewsGator

If you have any questions, please contact the Webteam (webteam@uuca.org) - we'll be glad to help!
